Awearness: Kenneth Cole Blogs About Social Awareness

Kenneth Cole is known for using socially- and politically-charged messaging in his ads, like the latest billboard that just went up in NYC proclaiming, “In the U.S. somebody is shot every 6 seconds. Is this what arms are for?”

Now he’s doing the same on the web, launching a blog all about social awareness called Awearnessblog (how cute!). The site is going to feature celebrity bloggers, who will post about issues close to their hearts and, hopefully, the hearts of consumers (Mr. Cole himself is planning to post once a week). Blogging will revolve around all manner of social issues ranging from poverty and homelessness to the environment and politics, and you can expect about 5 posts a day. Crain’s New York reports:

New York Giants player Michael Strahan is slated to share his perspective on athletes using human growth hormone, and actor Joe Pantoliano will write about mental health issues as they relate to veterans of the Iraq war, Mr. Cole says.

Kenneth Cole partnered with Electric Artists to produce the blog, which took a year (!!!!) to create. The site does look pretty sharp (at least in its pre-launch phase; it’s scheduled to go live on Feb. 18), channeling imagery from 1950’s Communist Bloc.

  1. Is that what arms are for? Powerful question… looking forward to hearing more from the awe-ar(e)-ness blog.

  2. Energy Independence is the corner stone of freedom and liberty and the end of world violence as we know it. Imagine defunding all the would be killers. All we have to do is grow our own energy and we are there. Drill in Anwar. More coal. More nuclear.

  3. Is it just me, or do others cringe when you read some cheeky play on words from Mr. Cole? The double-entendres seem to take a serious issue and then cheapen it by adding that “ohh, gotcha, I’m so clever” message.. It’s obviously important that we become aware of the social issues he is advocating, (AIDS, violence, prejudice, etc..) How about not joking about them, tho-

Yeah, that, and the issue that the blog looks like some Shepard Fairey knock off.. http://obeygiant.com/
