Ever since Martha Stewart was on the cover of Wired, we’ve been noticing more and more “how-to” on the web. Now, DIY meets online video meets UGC in the ultimate web trend mashup: the how-to video site. As trends go, three have launched lately. How to pick the one for you? Here’s our handy guide:
eHow
Tagline: “How To Do Just About Everything.”
Contents: Mix of professionally-written and UGC articles and videos on topics ranging from tying a necktie to installing a hard drive.
Community: The top eHow is “How to Lose Weight Fast,” followed by “How to Deck the Halls for the Holidays,” if that gives you a sense.
WonderHowTo
Tagline: “Every How-To Video That Exists”
Contents: See tagline
Community: Started by Stephen Chao, who helped develop TV shows like “Cops” and once worked at the National Enquirer, the site highlights videos that reflect his penchant for the quirky and bizarre.
Howcast
Tagline: “Shows You How”
Contents: How-to with tongue-in-cheek from both professionals and users. Features include “How to Lie and Get Away With It,” “How to Hand Over a Newborn,” (pictured) and “How to Play No Limit Obama Hold ‘Em.” As funny as they may be, the videos and guides aim to be truly helpful. Guaranteed you will never drop a baby again.
Community: They say: “Cutting-edge filmmakers, savvy experts–and you!” We say: we did join the beta so, yes, us!

Definitely a couple of new ones here to me, thanks. We wrote a similar post at ReadWriteWeb a few months ago and it’s been absurdly popular. Last week I threw most of the URLs in that post into a Google Custom Search Engine that anyone can use to find how-to’s across 17 different sites. http://tinyurl.com/37×269 I’ll have to add the ones here that aren’t there.
