In the past, if a New Yorker hasn’t made Valentine’s Day reservations by now, he’s taking the lady to McDonalds. But thanks to a new site, even the biggest flake can get a table at Nobu—for $40.
Welcome to TableXchange, an ebay for reservations. Prospective diners can purchase a reservation from a seller who won’t be using it. Although we have mentioned their service before, we thought we’d give you a timely update: the site now works for New York, the Hamptons and San Francisco, where seats at a restaurant this VDay can require some serious planning or palm-greasing. “In the past, the poor man/woman that forgot to book valentines day well in advance was out of luck and in proverbial hot water with their significant other,” Will Geronimo, co-founder of TableXchange told us. “Now, as little as $25 gets you a reservation to a very popular restaurant on last minute notice.”
This practice of seat-scalping, while questionable, could certainly come in handy for a last minute date or demanding client. It could also prove lucrative for anyone that can pick up a phone. But $40 is a small price for many to stay out of the doghouse. Just think of it as the cost of one Matsuhisa-made hand roll.
And in case you need a Hershberger haircut before that big date, next year you might be able to buy that too. As the site grows, it plans to traffic in a range of services. According to Geronimo, “We want to be known for being the stop for any last minute service (i.e., think hair appointments, housecleaning, etc.) that would be in short supply.”
