Scott over at the Sartorialist uncovers a photo for J.Crew’s 2008 spring preview (left) that looks uncannily like a shot he took in June 2007 (right).

What’s interesting is the apparent lack of creativity at all levels at J.Crew; sure, Sartorialist’s subjects and photographs often inspire designers at fashion houses, but now they’re simply copied.

  1. Yah, totally ripped, and ripped well. As I recently posted in my blog “Good writers emulate, great writers steal.” (I stole this quote from Hemingway-he stole it from TS Elliot, who stole it from Picasso.)

Scott’s genius makes him a great target.

  2. The styling is copied, but not the design. The garments belonging to both men could be sourced from a dozen different stores around the world. Your point about creativity stands however.

  3. Since when has fashion not been about stealing and copying? Isn’t that the point of all the knockoffs that flood the stores after the fashion shows and account for success of stores like Strawberry and Zara and H&M?

It’s just a picture not a design. If Scott at the Sartorialist had any smarts he would figure out how to become a creative consultant for J. Crew and have them pay him for his fashion advice.
