NYC Dept. Of Transportation Curates Street Art

By Dave Pinter on March 3, 2008

The New York City Department of Transportation unveiled the first work of it’s new Temporary Art Program last week in Dumbo. The work is a large mural titled Nature Matching Systems by Tattfoo Tan. Tan held workshops and collaborated with neighborhood school children to paint the 550+ squares who’s colors were derived from fruits and vegetables they chose. Tan hopes the creative experience inspires healthier eating in the students and serves as a reminder to everyone to consume your daily recommended dose of color.

The DOT’s Temporary Art Program will install short term works all over New York City in overlooked spaces. The 70 foot long Dumbo mural is attached to a corrugated fence underneath the Manhattan Bridge. It will remain on view for the next 11 months. The DOT hopes to add five projects each year. The program will involve local artists in partnership with business improvement districts and community organizations.

Nature Matching Systems can be seen on Front Street between Adams and Pearl in Brooklyn.
