It was nice to see designers taking a fresh look at furniture with the aim of building new functional roles into the pieces. We found three of the best examples from the show that tackle limited space issues, flexibility, and efficient use of materials.
Paket (above) is a new table seating system designed for Offi by Srdjan Simic. It evolved as a product to address small dwellings and their ever growing need for multi-functional objects. This table can comfortably seat one, two, three or four people. It unfolds from its minimal footprint of 20″ x 20″ to an almost full size dining table that measures 43″ across. It is not just a dining table – It can also serve as an office desk, game table, homework table for kids, counter space, etc. It is essentially an unfolding surface with four full size chairs.
Nearly hidden away on the floor of Javits was the Crescendo C2 table/desk from German manufacturer Stilvoll. The table features stunning craftsmanship and details using solid beech wood naturally finished with linseed oil and beeswax. The table is height adjustable using a patented system of adjustable blocks in each leg. It could convert from dining table to work desk to stand up counter. The work surface features an integrated storage and cable routing bin accessed by pulling the two halves of the top apart. There is also a writing/keyboard platform that can be angled up from the table top. Additional shelves can be added.
RS from Spain brought their Guerrilla Containers created by Stone Designs. These containers are shaped like the sandbags used in the trenches, and it is from that concept that they have derived their name. This is a piece with a dreamlike and conceptual character, which serves either as a container, space divider or as floor level seating.
