WiPS: WiFi GPS

WIPSA German software company called Spotigo has announced that it can locate someone with an accuracy of up to 1 meter just using WiFi networks. The press release says that WiFi-based Positioning Solution (WiPS) sets new standards in positioning accuracy by identifying the user’s position based on WiFi signal patterns that are connected by WiFi devices (such as PDAs, mobile phones, tablet PCs, laptops, etc.) or WiFi-tagged persons(!) and material. They say it’s better that satellite GPS in cities because of the limitations imposed by high buildings and narrow streets and that it will be possible to offer location-aware content on all mobile devices even if they don’t have GPS.
