3G iPhone Rumors Turn Mac Fans Into Spys
The rumors and speculation surrounding Steve Jobs’ impending announcement at the Apple World Developers Conference this coming Monday are reaching a fever pitch. Obsessive Mac fans are using any kind of information they can get their hands on to determine what new product will be revealed on June 9th. 3G iPhone? Tablet computer? Apple’s wall of secrecy seems impenetrable. People are responding by digging up far fetched clues wherever they can find them. One of the more unusual sources of information is Import Genius, a website that collects, analyzes and sells data on every shipping container entering the US.

Import Genius reports:

Since mid-March, Apple Inc. and its logistics partners have imported 188 ocean containers of a product type never before declared on its shipping manifests.

With iPhones currently out of stock at many Apple stores, including its flagship outlets in New York City, rumors abound that the company is winnowing stocks in preparation for a new 3G version of the phone.

Now data from U.S. customs records seem to confirm this prediction, according to ImportGenius.com. By analyzing thousands of U.S. customs records for Apple Computer, employees of the search engine for container shipment data identified a major spike in imports generated by a new product type.

“They have never before reported this product on their customs declarations,” says Ryan Petersen of ImportGenius.com. “The fact that they are importing millions of units, combined with dwindling stocks of the first generation of iPhones, clearly supports the Citi analysts predictions.”

They may have them in store (unlikely) but they definitely won’t be selling them till July 11th. Today Steve made the announcement.

Before he made the announcement I had this blog up with pics of what the new iPhone would look like, but alas there will be no real visual changes made:
