Londonist points us to news that a children’s nursery in London now uses a fingerprint scanning system to allow parents and staff in and out of the play-group. Charity Kidscape, which aims to protect children from harm, told a London newspaper that the measure was paranoid and overkill:
Director Michelle Elliot said: “We don’t want to give children the idea that the world is so dangerous that they can’t even go to nursery school without being scanned.”
Londonist says that this is another example of extreme reaction to a unneceesary sense of fear in the UK:
High-profile abduction cases over the last decade have been molded by a febrile, pandemic-loving press into a climate of fear that is at odds with reality. The number of child abductions and murders in Britain remains low, yet the fear of such crimes is astronomically high.
