If you thought the Hello Kitty phenomenon had subsided in Asia, you don’t have to look any farther than the theatrical stages of mainland China. The 30 year old Japanese cartoon character is in the middle of its “Dream Light Fantasy” China tour and tickets are going fast for a series of shows next month in Shanghai. The show combines the pop-culture cartoon characters with Chinese acrobatics, which is one of China’s longstanding theatrical attractions.

Hello Kitty is still one of the leading brands for Japanese cute culture in Asia and no where is that more apparent than in Shanghai where small shops sell Hello Kitty stuffed animals, pencil holders, keychains and knickknacks of every sort.
