Increase Your Gas Milage By Hypermiling

By Dan Gould on June 3, 2008

Hypermiling is a set of bizarre but effective driving techniques aimed at squeezing out the highest gas mileage possible. Once relegated to a small group of fuel economy obsessed drivers, this sport of MPG maximizing is becoming a popular way to combat skyrocketing gasoline prices. Hypermilers report getting 60 mpg in a Honda Civic and up to 100 mpg in a Prius. The basics are simple – coast whenever possible, don’t slam on the brakes or accelerator, drive the speed limit or below, use cruise control and keep up on your cars maintenance. They proceed to get more dangerous after that, with stunts like turning off your engine while coasting downhill and drafting behind other vehicles on the highway to reduce aerodynamic drag.
