Crude Necklaces

Crude Necklaces

By Christine Huang on July 23, 2008

Thrillist turned us onto the Crude Jewelry Collection by Design Glut – gold oil barrel pendant necklaces engraved with the new cost of oil on the day of production, with a new batch produced monthly. They call it “satirical bling” – a way to memorialize a time that, in the future, we’ll most likely look back on in shame or disbelief. We also liked the necklaces in limited-edition black brass – a result of a promise Design Glut made to their customers that if oil ever reached $100/barrel (which it did in January of this year), they would create a limited edition black version of the necklace to call attention to the historic day. In their words:

These necklaces would be a symbol of the end of cheap fossil fuels. The pieces were also intended to create a historical marker, so that one day, when you are charging your electric car with your children, you can say, “I remember when crude hit $100.”
