In the past, you’ve only ever been able to withdraw £10 from Britain’s cash machines ($20) but Hackney, in East London, is to get the UK’s first ever machine to dispense a lower denomination on August 1st. Earlier this month, the Bank of England had argued that the nation’s high street banks were ‘sitting on piles’ of £5 notes instead of offering consumers the chance to withdraw smaller amounts. Ron Delnevo, the managing director of Bank Machine, explained it would be of ‘great benefit’ to customers, adding ‘our campaign is particularly timely given the new credit crunch’.

I’m sure I used to get £5 notes from cash machines in the North East… Either that’s a comment on my memory that I can’t fully remember, or a comment on the North East. Probably the latter.

You have been able to get £5 notes of out cash machines near in and around Cardiff Uni buildings for years, and I’m sure you can in many other places…
Nice idea to get Bank Machine some publicity, shame it was a lie (not that it mattered as is still worked!)

Until recently, even London, that bastion of cheapness (!) had a Lloyd’s near Tottenham Court road which would dispense £5 notes as well…Funny to think that in ten years evenings out now seem to be closer to the £50 mark than a fiver down the student union.

You always used to be able to get £5 notes out of cashpoint machines, probably until about ten years ago. In my University Campus in Southampton the Lloyds machine dispensed £5 notes (handily for students) even in 2005.
Recently I’ve used machines that will only dispense in denominations of 20, hopefully that won’t become common place!

…also just noticed in your picture it’s one of those cashpoints that charges you for withdrawals so your fiver is probably going to cost you 7 quid
