There are a few soap opera standout performers, but for the most part the stable of actors and actresses do not become brands in themselves. This is the result of smart management. Sure there was Luke and Laura’s wedding on General Hospital, but the horse pulling the soap opera cart is not a personal brand, it’s P&G, the reason for the entertainment’s existence and the soap opera stars’ paychecks. It’s ironic that the emotional rollercoaster of soap operas is one of the most dependable platforms for brand development and promotion.

I can see some artists and fans shying away from this sort of partnership, but I'm curious to see how it plays out for the big corporate brand names and if the investment really pays off for their brand-building (and how that would be measured).
Dr. Tantillo ('the marketing doctor') did a recent post on this topic--how a partnership with music artists could be a boon for P&G but also a potential liability: http://blog.marketingdoctor.tv/2008/07/10/brand-advisory.aspx

I love seeing my favorite subject get some play on my favorite blog! Things should get very interesting in coming weeks/months/year as the output (both music and marketing) from these deals start to see the light of day.
