Matt W Moore’s graphic work is unique and increasing popular. In an era that can tend to breed themes and genre styles, Matt seems to have taken a different route - choosing to explore his vector graphic obsession ad infinitum. With the release of a new book, we wanted to find out more about the artist and the inspiration behind his approach to his work.
Congratulations on the release of your new book of graphics. Your style seems to be very unique in an era where digital connectivity appears to promote homogeneity. How would you describe it?
Thanks Piers, I am always striving to create unique designs. These days, there is so much to look at, and history is so accessible. It means a lot to me to hear people say they feel my work is very bold and original. This new book “MWM Vectorfunk” is a collection of the evolution of this particular style that I have been developing in recent years. Crazy colors, abstract geometry, 100% digital vector artwork. There are many different ways to explain the style and process, my favorite is “topography maps of my daydreams.”
Where did you get the inspiration from?
The Vectorfunk work is very inspired by math, architecture, optical illusions, and texture. Always with a hint of psychadelia and mystery too.
As a graphic designer - how do the books fit in with your other creative work? Are they moneymakers - or do you create these books for other reasons?
Well I’ve done a few different series of books over the years. This new book is very close to design, but my other series B/W Bangers is really in the fine art/illustration zone. Computer off and paint stains on my fingers. Over the years, doing personal book projects has given me the opportunity to hyper-focus on large series of new work. Experimenting, trying new things, expanding my visual vocabulary. The books have been my escape, a way for me to keep momentum with personal work. As for cheese… Sure, they make money, slowly but surely. Posters sell out way faster. But the books truly become time capsules of different chapters of my studio. And they make great hand-offs and promos too.
What artists are inspiring you right now?

I just returned from Barcelona, so right now I am still in awe of the intricate tile mosaics and vibrant Spanish color palettes. I love this stuff, the geometry of the tile grids, all the hand painted signs, and the tropical colors. I did some serious digging in Barcelona and learned even more about my all time favorite artist MC Escher, and also Gaudi. Geniuses! I’m also really diggin’ the work of local graffiti muralist Ovni. She rocks! Of course all the artists with ROJO, The KDU, and my graffiti crew WUT too!
I gave the book to my son, Cy - and he loves the colors and patterns. Have you ever thought about making kids books?
For sure! I actually did a children’s book in 2004 called “Front On This”. It was a realistic storyline of the ascension of hip-hop culture and all that comes with it, but the narrative was very easy to read… Kid friendly. I would really enjoy working on more projects like this, books, games, you name it, I am open. It’s great to hear Cy enjoys the book, well have to get him some custom MWM wallpaper for his playhouse!
For sure! Thank’s for your time.
