Car Sharing On Campus

by Dan Gould

It’s back to school time, and if you’re a freshmen heading to college at University of Miami, make sure to leave the car at home. The school has implemented a no-car rule for first year students. Besides encouraging biking, walking and public transportation, the school has partnered with Zipcar to offer fuel efficient cars to incoming freshmen.

Bowdoin College in Maine is planning to follow suit in fall of 2009, joining a growing number of schools offering the car-sharing program including: Amherst, Boston, Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, M.I.T., Smith, the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina and Wellesley.

Limiting freshman car use is being used to cut back environmental pollution, free up limited parking and thin out traffic congestion in the campus areas.
