Digital Concept Art Inspires A Digital Music Composer

Digital Concept Art Inspires A Digital Music Composer

By Dave Pinter on August 8, 2008

CGSociety recently profiled composer Justin Lassen who’s been creating scores for digital concept art he’s seen. Lassen noted that many digital artists listen to music while working and allow those sounds to filter in. He works in reverse. He looks for inspiration in the color, texture and subjects of these pieces attempting to place himself in the scene.

In a sense, the music is already composed, and my eye converts what it sees into audio, through my fingers. I believe that it is very natural for visual artists to want to add a new dimensionality to their work with audio.

The CGS page features images from a number of artists along with Lassen’s composition for each. Lassen has produced remixes for artists like Madonna, Garbage, Blue Man Group, Lenny Kravitz, Robert Miles, Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Apocalyptica as well as many others. He’s also worked on various high-profile projects for game and technology companies such as Interplay, Cakewalk and Intel.
