Liveplace: A Hyper-Real, Cloud Based World

By Dan Gould on August 13, 2008

Liveplace recently leaked a mind blowing video, of what’s speculated to be an online virtual world. The video depicts an extremely detailed and rich urban landscape, filled with complex buildings and skyscrapers. Cars move about, and realistic weather occurs. If you didn’t know any better, this could be a real world film.

The magic behind this detail, and the real story here, is the technology behind the video. The cityscape is actually being processed real time, by a server based 3D engine called OTOY. The engine does all the hard work “in the cloud”, creating 3D landscapes and streaming them to your computer. It’s reported that OTOY will do all the hard work, and you’ll be able to experience these amazing graphics on any kind on device: phone, desktop, laptop -wherever. No special hardware, or fast processing speed is required on the receiving device.
