Mazda Shows “Sustainable” SUV at Russian Auto Show Today

By Dave Pinter on August 26, 2008

Another lingering hot spot for SUV sales turns out to be Russia. Sales of SUV’s represent 16 percent of the market and have grown ten times in the last three years. Mazda hopes to make an impression with the latest concept emerging from the design studios. Called the ‘Kazamai’, the crossover/SUV unfortunately doesn’t break new ground using hybrid technology, but it does score a few eco points. Mazda is looking at incorporating a new 2.0 litre direct injection engine designed to be 30 percent more efficient with fuel usage over the current spec engine. Engineers have also looked for ways to cut the overall weight of the vehicle to aid efficiency. Extensive use of aluminium was incorporated into vehicle.

The exterior design takes cues from the flowing lines of last years Furai race car. Almost more sculpture than car. There are some nice details like the door panels which have a subtle ripple pattern. Mazda has not set a date for production, calling the Kazamai a ‘near future’ look.
