Swedish McDonalds Takes Recycling To the Next Level

By Dan Gould on August 15, 2008

I always wonder what’s going to happen to my trash when I dispose of it in public places. Will it get sorted and recycled, or end up wasting away in a landfill? Most restaurants and public places in the US have sorry recycling systems in place.

The Copenhaganize blog has given me hope. This image, taken at a McDonald’s in Sweden, shows the advanced recycling efforts going on over there. There is no single, big gaping garbage can at this fast food joint, the bin has eight separate slots for waste and re-usable goods. The recycling station breaks down the remains of your meal into the following categories: cans and plastic bottles, drink and ice, straws and plastic lids, cups, burger boxes + cardboard, trays, food leftovers, and everything else.

This particular McDonald’s also provides a microwave to warm baby food, and serves fruit with all the kid’s meals. Good job on all accounts, let’s hope this goes worldwide.
