During our recent stay in San Francisco we had to drop by the wonderful Giant Robot store, just around the corner from Haight Street. The shop still is a reliable source for great books, graphic novels, T-shirts, plastic toys, artist prints and also has a gallery space with changing exhibitions.

For all of those who don’t know about the shop: Giant Robot’s range includes curated products from Asia as well as local US artists and designers. They’re known for their thoughtful choice of product offerings, and one featured artist that particularly caught our eye was Nikki McClure. Several of her prints and greeting cards were on display, all made with Nikki’s distinct paper cutting technique.

Nikki hails from Olympia, Washington. She is a self-taught artist and has been into making paper-cuts since 1996. The themes she works with are motherhood and nature while she aims for simple and endearing pictures. Her site reads:

Her work depicts the virtues of hard labor and patience, which is inherent in her process as well as in the images themselves: weathered hands washing dishes, people sweeping, mothers caring for their babies, and farmers working the land. But there is also a large element of celebration, of taking the time to roll around in the grass and get wet from the early morning dew. The need for all of us to lay down on the ground, grab hold of the earth, look at the stars and dream. She magnifies the importance of simple things, like the change of seasons, slowing down the world for a moment so we can actually taste it.

We left the store with a few extra bags…
