Making Tunes Out of Thin Air with Wii Music

Making Tunes Out of Thin Air with Wii Music

By Dan Gould on September 24, 2008

Nintendo’s popular Wii video game system gets a new addition on October 20th, with Wii Music. The new software promises to bring the experience of making music to an audience who may normally be hesitant, thinking that it’s too difficult.

Players can choose from a slew of instruments including the  electric guitar; trumpet, saxophone, clarinet  and even more exotic choices like steel drums, marimba and sitar. New songs can be improvised, or you can play along with pre-recorded music. The Wii controller and Nunchuk are manipulated in a variety of ways to control the chosen instruments. A little social fun can be had as well. Wii musicians can send tracks to friends on the Wii network, to add their own performances to the mix.

Besides the fun factor, it could be an interesting new way to make music (and possibly steal some shine from Guitar Hero). It has the potential to be a unusual “instrument” for musicians, similar to the 8-bit artist’s who’ve hacked the Gameboy to produce tunes.
