A sign we saw last weekend on the back of this police van in Brighton in the UK comes across rather Orwellian. “Smile. You’re On CCTV” it reads with a smiley face. Is that supposed to make us feel safer or worry more?

Inspiration to make things better.

  1. Quick! Somebody get a red pen out and add a dash of red “blood”. Viola! Instant ambient campaign for the Watchmen.

Thank you, I’m here all week.

  2. brilliant, mobile TV… move over celebrities…. we’re the stars, and the streets are the theatre. Bring it on!

  3. @Dale – “Let’s put on the show right here!”

  4. Actually this reminds me of something that happened at the airport on the way to London.

A old Indian woman, maybe in her late 60’s wearing a bright sari was being “wanded” by a stern TSA man. She was giggling like crazy and clearly couldn’t understand him as he barked, “this isn’t funny lady raise your arms.” She was spinning round and laughing. He moved her arms up and she began to flap like a bird, laughing all the more.

Her laughter was pure and contagious, other people in the line began to giggle.

It was a wonderful moment – joy in the face of thuggery (he was acting like a thug in his manner and tone). It occurred to me that this may be the best way to deal with all this growing state oppression (sorry, security). Laugh at it.

I’m not saying a troupe of clowns would have stopped the march of Nazi Germany but if people had laughed at it in the first place, things may have turned out differently.
