Re-Wilding Photography Project

By Nicko Margolies on September 29, 2008

Photographer Lucas Foglia recently created a project focused on the “Re-wilding” phenomenon in the Southeastern United States.  Foglia describes Re-wilding as “the process of creating a lifestyle that is independent of the domestication of civilization.”  In his series of photographs he captures portraits of the people who follow this simplistic lifestyle and their unique relationship with nature.  Foglia donates a portion of his proceeds to his subjects as he recognizes that every photograph is a collaboration between photographer and subject.  On his site Foglia discusses his childhood and how this project is of personal importance to him:

I grew up with my extended family on a farm in suburban Long Island. Influenced by the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960′s, my parents maintained an agricultural lifestyle as malls and supermarkets developed around us. We heated with wood, grew and canned our food and bartered plants for everything from shoes to dentistry…I am drawn to my subjects’ desire for self-sufficiency and intrigued by the complexity of their relationship with the natural world.
