Reclaimer: Reharvesting Urban Timber

Reclaimer: Reharvesting Urban Timber

By Dan Gould on September 26, 2008

Los Angeles based “The Reclaimer” salvages usable wood from old buildings and re-sells it to builders. It’s a good thing too, LA landfills are approximately 5 years away from being completely filled up.In fact, Half a billion board feet of lumber are thrown away in Los Angeles every year.

The company focuses on pre WWII buildings because they are usually constructed of large boards of Douglas Fir. They then cut the wood down to today’s standard sizes and put them up for sale. The scraps are used as well. Saw dust from the reshaping process gets re-used for products like horse bedding.
