2008′s Top 10 Neighborhoods in America

By Dan Gould on October 9, 2008

The American Planning Association has released their list of the top 10 great neighborhoods in America (along with lists of great streets, and public spaces). The definition of neighborhood they go by is flexible, but must follow a set of characteristics and guidelines. The neighborhood must be at least 10 years old, and have a definite sense of boundary. This year’s list contains a diverse selection of different areas including upstate NY, Kansas, Idaho and Wyoming.

Some characteristics of a great neighborhood as defined by the APA:

1. It has a variety of functional attributes that contribute to a resident’s day-to-day living

2. Accommodates multi-modal transportation (i.e. pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers).

3. Has design and architectural features that are visually interesting.

4. Encourages human contact and social activities.

5. Promotes community involvement and maintains a secure environment.

6. Promotes sustainability and responds to climatic demands.

7. Has a memorable character.
