Comic Books as Business Communications Tool

We’ve noted a few recent examples of comic books being used as a vehicle for business communications. Beyond visually breaking out from photography or video, comics offer approachability and the opportunity to tell a broader story.

Qua, a brand environment design firm based in the Netherlands recently completed a 32 page comic outlining a new company strategy for PON Holdings. Qua needed to provide PON with a communications tool that introduced the strategy in a very accessible and entertaining way. The choice of a ‘graphic novel’ format allowed Qua to have more control over the process and visually have limitless possibilities. The team settled on a style that included recognizable people within the organization and products the company represents. The flexibility of the format allowed Qua to offer seven different translations so the publication could be distributed to offices worldwide.

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg has partnered with DC Comics to release a limited edition comic along side her Wonder Woman inspired holiday 2008 collection. The book is called ‘The Wonder Woman You Can Be: The Adventures of Diva, Viva, and Fifa. Furstenberg wrote the story and artist Konstantin Kakanias created the visuals. Diane has included in the book her “Words to Live By”, phrases that inspire her and that she hopes will inspire others. The large format book also includes a gallery of cover art from past Wonder Woman comics, and contributions from Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter and Gloria Steinem. The proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit Vital Voices, a non-profit dedicated to empowering women worldwide.
