Creating Community With Urban Farming

Creating Community With Urban Farming

By Dan Gould on October 28, 2008

Will Allen is a farmer and CEO of Growing Power, a community farm and food center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Growing Power’s mission is to help facilitate community run food systems. Locally, nationally and internationally, they teach people to grow food, create quality soil and generate energy. Allen believes that the next generation of farmers is going to come from the cities, as they can be some of the worst “food deserts” – areas where highly processed food is the only options. Allen recently won a MacArthur “genius grant” for his effective urban farming methods.
