NOCC’s Help Me Darwin project applies Darwin’s theory of evolution to furniture design. The Paris-based design studio developed the ‘Mutant cardboard furniture kit’ for habitat emergencies. NOCC explains:
From the cardboard in the bag you build a folding screen from which you can create a bed, then a table and then 3 stools. This way you can easily adapt to empty habitat spaces when facing an emergency (due to natural catastrophes or just when you move-out). The carry-on bag unfolds in order to become the bed’s mattress.
The design will be on display as part of the “European Talent” at Eindhoven’s Designhuis during the Dutch Design Week 08, October 18 through November 30.

Funny how the last time portable furniture was required was in the nineteenth century, when Europe was ‘campaigning’ all over the globe for economic/cultural domination. It appears the new generation of ‘campaign’ furniture addresses the (indirect) environmental fallout from over a century of industrial colonialism.
