There’s been a bit of chatter around the office here about craft and DIY lifestyles coming to prominence in the wake of this economic crisis. With sh-t hitting the fan, could these tight times be the impetus for America innovation? While the DIY scene has undoubtedly been growing for a while now, in both size and exposure, it’s generally been a ‘cultural luxury’ that participants have proactively taken a part in. While the ethical, environmental, and economic benefits of DIY have always been a consideration; ultimately, the culture has traditionally been fueled by artistic and/or political motivations.
But will genuine economic constraints be the final push necessary for turning ‘DIY’ lifestyles into ‘normal people’ lifestyles? One indication that the answer might be ‘yes’ is Make: television, a public TV show debuting in January based on the popular DIY lifestyle publication, Make Magazine. The show will feature stories of accomplished Makers and their amazing projects.
