Growing Furniture Made Out of Crystals

Growing Furniture Made Out of Crystals

By Dan Gould on October 20, 2008

Growing furniture? It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka grows his own seating using crystals as the building material. The process begins with a polyester elastomer skeleton that’s seeded with living crystals. This base is submerged in an aquarium which provides the proper environment for the crystals to grow and take on the chair shape (the process takes about a month to complete). Named the Venus chair, it’s part of the Second Nature exhibition at 21_21 Design Sight in Tokyo.
