Art Lebedev Traffic Light Concept Makes You Want to Stop and Look Both Ways

By Dave Pinter on November 24, 2008

Pretty amazing when you think about all the time people dedicate to staring at a traffic signal that the design of them has chanced so little since their invention. Recently the Art Lebedev Studio wondered if technological advances in lighting could improve the humble traffic light.

Their idea for the next generation traffic signal is called Luxofor. The most noticeable change the team made was to use square lights instead of the traditional round ones. The rationale behind the move is to make the lights more easily noticeable and recognizable by having a larger illuminated surface area but keeping to the same overall dimensions as a round light. The light source is a collection of super-bright light diodes that can be freely arranged to panels of light or symbols.

The beauty of the design comes from the purity of the shapes. There are no fussy details to distract the eye. Even the angled sun bezel, while serving an important functional purpose, subtly leads your eye to focus of the signal light.
