Drop.io is like Twitter–you don’t grasp its usefulness (or even really get it) until you see it.
So this week, they announced their first redesign and included a helpful video explanation with the help of demogirl.com. Demogirl is Molly McDonald, who does the site with her two brothers. They saw the need for short demos for new digital services, so they stepped in for the camera shy. It’s great for those who prefer something a little more polished (and it doesn’t hurt that she sounds hot).
As we’ve previously noted, video is the new instruction manual. Every tech release (especially iPhone apps) we’ve seen recently has been accompanied by a recorded demo. It makes complete sense: We don’t know anyone who reads instruction manuals, yet we are a culture of DIY and high tech. We need to learn how to do these things. Sure, we prefer things to be intuitive (hence our love of Apple), but our disdain for the manual is also indicative of our visually-driven culture. How-to sites like Howcast and eHow have stepped in to solve this as developers hop (and dance) in front of the camera. Demogirl sits somewhere in the middle.
Is she the voice of our visual generation? Nerdy, sexy and highly informative.
