PSFK Talks to StyleBible.ph

StyleBible.ph is the online voice of Preview, a leading fashion publication in the Philippines. The site is also in the process of building a well-curated online collection of independent homegrown clothing and accessories. Recently, PSFK got a chance to chat with Managing Editor Isabelle Andaya on the Philippines’ place in global fashion as well as on some leading and emerging talents that are shaping the local movement.

So what is Philippine fashion’s place in the world?

I would say that the number of people interested in fashion in the Philippines has grown and we are slowly discovering our own style and identity. Many Filipino designers have succeeded in the global arena: Monique Lhuillier’s gowns have been seen on the red carpet in Hollywood and have become the bridal gown of choice for many A-Listers; Rafe Totengco has set-up his flagship store in New York and his shoes and bags have also been featured in many global glossies; and I just discovered the brand Bastion by RM Boucher, a high-end jewelry label designed by Filipina Ramona Boucher whose clientele includes royalty and even Elizabeth Taylor.

Is there any category in style where the Philippines can be a global influence in going forward?

Maybe in the Eco-Chic movement that’s slowly creeping into the global style front. Our indiginous fabrics and weaves are all organic and the Dept. of Agriculture and various design competitions, and the local designers themselves have been working on creating modern and wearable garments using pina, jusi, abaca, and Philippine silk. Upcycling has also become quite popular with many reworking old items and vintage finds to create really great fashionable pieces.

Who are some local names that we should be looking out for?

Young designers like Mitch Dulce and Gian Romano are slowly making names for themselves in the global arena. Both have been schooled abroad at Central St. Martins. Mitch is a milliner and her design sensibilities are influenced by a mix of British and Japanese designers. She was featured in the Taschen 2008 book of Asian Designers I think. Gian was once a part of the As Four team and he just recently launched his self-titled label at Black Market in Singapore. Locally, Rajo Laurel has done a wonderful job of building an actual design house with both a retail and couture arm. I think he’s also on the verge of hitting the global market. There are so many talented Filipino designers, many of whom have won international competions here and abroad (Jojie Lloren and Dennis Lustico, and Alex Pigao won top prizes at the Young Designers Competition in Paris).

Thanks, Isha!
