The Auteurs is a new site that hopes to build on the digital venue for cinema by adding a rich social community of discussion. The dictionary defines an auteur as “a filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp.” The site hopes to expand that definition by building a unique social experience that brings together the experience of other online moviegoers to reflect on each film. The Auteurs allows users to watch select films free and others for a $5 fee, all in a flash-based but high quality online format.
The site is still in beta, but already boasts a humble library of classics including I Shot Jessie James (1949) and God’s Country (1985). The Criterion Collection fuels the collection and the site hosts a monthly virtual film festival including some provocative and often obscure movies. A discussion section, called the Notebook, is essentially a cinema blog detailing the films seen across the site, but there is also a vibrant forum with a range of topics and 16,000 posts.

I’m about to try this out, but I just wonder if it’ll be that much different from commenting on/reviewing films in film sites like say rotten tomatoes…
