The world’s first major mobile phone specifically designed to meet the demands of children and their parents will be launched next month in Hong Kong. According to the design director, the inspiration behind the Mo1 was to “create a mobile phone which [could] be used by children safely and independently.”
The child-specific features designed for 6 to 12 years olds include:
- No numbers on the keyboard so children can only call or receive calls from phone numbers that are pre-set by their parents
- A GPS-based “Find Me Service” function that allows parents to know the location of their children
- Speed-dial buttons for direct calls to Mom and Dad.
- Emergency phone always enabled
- Speakerphone / hands-free mode on by default, to avoid danger from radio waves
The Mo1 will retail for HKD 1280 (~$165).

Hmmm… If my one year old knows how to turn on my television with a remote control with 35 buttons, why does a 6 year old need a phone with only 6? Not too sure they really did the research for this one.

On behalf of the team that developed this device, I can assure there has been extensive and meaningful research behind its conceptualisation.
Designing a product for kids involves not only looking at what kids are capable of doing, but also at the context of use, and at parents’ and relatives’ needs and values. Further, you also need to factor the mission and brand values of the company behind the product.
This analysis allowed us to see that, indeed, kids are capable of carrying out complex tasks. However, parents in general do not want their kids to have unrestricted potential, and Imaginarium, the manufacturer, insists on producing educational and responsible products.
As a result, it was decided to simplify the end-user side of the product, 6 buttons, while keeping a good degree of flexibility on the parent side of the product. Through a back office application parents can configure the functions of the phone.
On a side note, we could also argue whether 35 buttons are needed in a remote.

This phone is by default loudspeaker and used on a dockstation. Regarding cell radiations, what about adult phones? do we think because is an “adult” phone kids are not affected by them? This phone is thought to help parents to educate the right usage of the mobile phones, use this in a proper way is in parents side.
