The Rise of Netbooks

The Rise of Netbooks

By Dan Gould on December 17, 2008

Core 77 reports on some interesting statistics which illustrate the growing popularity of netbooks. These mini computers with stripped down features are becoming big sellers – 5.6 million of them were sold last quarter and the Washington Post reports that netbooks are now outselling the iPhone. It seems there are two major factors boosting sales on netbooks – the low price, and the fact that computer users are offloading more tasks to web based software and data storage. The top five netbooks are all under $500 as listed by PC Mag, and $100 models can be had through Acer, Radio Shack and AT&T, who plan on making money by tying them to a cell phone like service plan.
