I agree with Andrew.
Yes, triple bottom line thinking is a far cry deeper and 'more' sustainable than the now-paper-thin "green" tag which has been so sullied by decades of sideline fighting, derision and greenwashing. Changing the conversation around it is a pertinent idea. But changing the name of it to a different color feels like a weak move, even if the intentions backing the move feel inspiring and right-minded.
A rebrand of sustainability almost feels like muddying the waters at this point in the game, what with the reality of the situation right now. And doing so by a mere change of colors might be asking for more derision.

I'm totally convinced we need to distinguish between thin green claims and true sustainability. I just think it's a really bad idea to re-brand sustainability with the name of another colour for obvious reasons. I just think it's open to cynicism. 'Blue is the new green' just sounds banal. You all most need to apologise for it before you've even started.

Yay!!!! Tamara is blogging again :)

Well I don't know if I want Saatchi's to 'own' the revolution (I was happier with Lovins, Porritt, Elkinton & co) but it got us all talking didn't it?

imho It's not Green we need to rebrand (partnership with nature, systems thinking, respect etc.) it's sustainability. I've been explaining to audiences recently that sustainability is 'the new IT'. Ie it costs billions, the CEO has religion about it, it in many cases is saving/playing for more billions. And anyway if you don't keep up the regulators will retire your business model. ie it's the most exciting thing to happen in business since women in the boardroom. But what a terrible name! Even STD's have more glamorous names (well some of them). If we can all agree to call sustainability something as snappy as 'blue' then I'll be very happy.

The links posted here were interesting, but I feel the were besides the point. "Blue not Green – is strategic and opportunity driven." I think this article is merely an attempt (a good one) to articulate the need to seriously discuss the importance of sustainable development as a strategy, not just a single product or service innovation.

Changing colors from green to blue might seem naive, but I feel there is a need to distinguish companies from each other by the commitment level they have to sustainable development. This is a natural next step in a trend that is looking for a way to evolve. As an opening to defining these new concepts, this article is a welcomed one.

many organisations have been promoting this kind of thinking for well, almost a decade. See Forum for the Future, SustainAbility etc. Welcome to the movement. Giving it a colour does not make it new.

Excuse me. Am I missing something? The idea of re-branding 'real-green' or 'authentic-green' is preposterous. What happens when we reach a point when we need to re-brand blue because there's so much bluewashing going on? Purple? To post rationalise some of the examples you've used here as blue thinking is just ridiculous.
