Hand-Me-Down is a new line of clothes from Howie guaranteed to last for 10 years and maybe longer.
While it tackles sustainability issues from a manufacturer’s point of view (creating a better product so people consume less), it raises questions about consumer habits.
Would people be willing to wear the same coat for 10 years? And what are the implications for fashion fads?
Or does this just mean that the coat will be left gathering dust at a second hand store for the next 9.5 years?

The designs are quite classic, so we imagine someone could definitely hold on to the jacket or bag for many years. People crave change, though, particularly in their wardrobe. By changing our clothes we express changes taking place within ourselves. Perhaps, then, the name Hand-Me-Down suggests that when someone is done using one of these products, they can hand it down to a friend or family member for continued use. However, people can already do this with the clothes they own, and as we know, it doesn’t lead to much of a reduction in consumption. Either way, we like the idea, and the messenger bag is fantastic. Thanks for sharing, Francisco!

On-going trade in Op shops gives the answer to this question, that’s where beautifully crafted clothes get cherished, added to, designed from, and passed around. Thumbs up to sustainable clothing, in 10 years a lot of people can experience value from quality.
