mSHAPE is a new company based out of Switzerland that is enabling users to design custom tables in the palms of their hand. After downloading and installing the mTABLE application onto a phone and selecting the general type of table they want (lounge, coffee, console, dining, etc), the type of material (Swiss walnut wood or a high gloss lacquer) and the exact dimensions, they are then free to begin adding their own personal touches. Utilizing one of seven deformers (intuitive and interactive tools used to sculpt surfaces into new shapes), users can create a variety dips, dents, and even complete holes through the surface of the table.
After submitting your design, you can check it out in a high resolution 3D viewer on the company’s website, or, seek further inspiration by scrolling through their gallery and having a look at what other people have done. Once satisfied, the design data is finally transmitted to the manufacturer where it is sculpted by a computer controlled drill, assembled by a professional carpenter, and shipped back to your house in approximately 8-12 weeks.
While we’re intrigued by the idea of designing on the go, we’re still not quite sure why anyone would want to design a table on their phone - particularly if the website contains the high resolution 3D viewer?
