NFL Logos, the Real Secret to Success?

NFL Logos, the Real Secret to Success?

By Scott Lachut on January 23, 2009

In an effort to cover the Super Bowl from every conceivable angle, the Wall Street Journal explores the impact a logo redesign – into sleeker, more aggressive versions – may have on determining future success in the NFL. There are certainly enough recent examples that support the theory, given the turnarounds of teams like the Patriots, Broncos and most recently the Cardinals – this year’s NFC Champions – following their image upgrades, but this has to be merely a coincidence, right?  Maybe not.

From a brand perspective, putting a new face on an organization sends a clear message to employees and consumers alike that change is underway and even if these changes only take place on the surface, the effects it can have on perception run deep. A new logo presents an unique opportunity to reinvent the overall identity and values of a brand. It has the ability to bring renewed attention and reestablish relevancy. And most importantly, a thoughtful and timely redesign signals a commitment on the part of ownership to keep up with a constantly evolving environment and put their best product on the shelves. And with a winning strategy like that, luck doesn’t even have to be part of the equation.
