The Greenhouse is Australia’s first temporary fully-sustainable exhibition. Made entirely from salvaged and recyclable materials, The Greenhouse’s exterior makes use of broken down shipping containers and packing crates. Located in Melbourne’s Federation Square, the exhibition has been open since October of 2008, serving up freshly grown produce from it’s roof-top garden. Visitors are served ‘taste tubes’ from ‘deregistered’ shopping trolleys, whilst taking a seat on a ‘re-structured’ street signs. The artist behind the project, Joost made use of old fire hydrants for tables and shaded the space using cloth woven from the discarded tiles of the Melbourne Cricket Club. Even the staff dress in recycled clothing and volunteer their time.
The thinking behind the project:
Think local, act local is the imperative of this ‘waste of a space’ project that is the brain-child of one man who, having made a life’s work of trash, will show how simply it turns into treasure….with minimal cost to pocket and no cost to the planet.
The exhibition runs till the 29th Janurary 2009.
