The Martinez Brothers may look like ordinary kids, but they have a secret identity that only comes out at night. Steve Jr. who’s 20 and Christian, who’s 17 lead double lives, where during the day they are just your average students, living in the sleepy New York City suburb of Monroe New York. But when darkness falls, they turn into globe trotting DJs — highly skilled and respected DJs who have played all over the world from Berlin to Ibiza.
The story begins with their father, Steve Sr. who was an active participant during the heyday of the NYC disco scene. He frequented clubs such as the Paradise Garage where he gained an deep appreciation for the unique mix of sounds being introduced by influential DJs like Larry Levan. A few years ago when he noticed his sons getting into DJing and the popular (but vulgar) forms of modern hip hop, Steve steered them instead towards the music he loved -disco and deep house. They took to it like naturals and the rest is history.
The New York Times reports:
The Martinez Brothers have established themselves in Europe, headlining parties in places like Berlin and Ibiza, Spain; they were recently part of a cover of Mixmag, a British dance-music journal, that was devoted to rising stars. Now TMB’s domestic profile is set to rise as well, with major gigs at the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach this spring and the release this month of the duo’s second single, “Debbie Downer,” a collaboration with the Greek-born, Berlin-based producer Argy. Combining looped disco vocals and pulsating tribal drums, “Debbie Downer” is an adrenaline-rush track that embodies the connection TMB makes between dance music’s then and its now.
