Nintendo have announced that it plans to deliver video-on-demand to internet-enabled owners of the Wii gaming concole. The service will commence in Japan in spring but the Telegraph reports that it could be rolled out globally by the end of the year. Almost half of Wii owners have connected their console to the web and this will give the technology company a viewership of over 18 million viewers. The Telegraph reveals some of the details in their report:

Broadcasts will be made exclusively for the Nintendo channel and will include cartoons, cookery programmes, brain-training quizzes and lifestyle shows. Most of the content will be free but Nintendo could make some programmes pay-per-view. Customers would be able to pay through the existing Wii Point payment system, that can already be used to pay for access to some games.

The report also says that Japanese television executives are worried about the possibility of the Wii becoming “the centerpiece of the living room”.
