A Different Kind of Pop-Up Shop: Free Store Opens Tonight in NYC

By Scott Lachut on February 19, 2009

NYC will get yet another pop-up shop starting tonight when artists Athena Robles and Anna Stein open their Free Store in Lower Manhattan. The project is a twist on the traditional consumer based model and will only stock one or two products that have been produced in-house, the rest of the merchandise will be provided by the public who are invited to bring in items to add to the collection or use them as a means of barter and exchange. The artist statement explains:

Free Store aims to reinforce and build connections based on trust and mutual exchange among the people of and visitors to Lower Manhattan. The project is designed to be a model of community and financial support that could also be used in other cities around the world.

The exhibit runs through March 22nd at a temporary gallery space located at 99 Nassau Street (between Fulton & Ann Streets). Visit the store’s Facebook page here.
