
Given the highly-produced nature of advertisements that surround us today, offering up slicker versions of reality made even better by entertaining a host of brands, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the idea of how great life could be, not to mention the myriad of conflicting choices being presented as the one true answer. And while it may be impossible to step away from this level of engagement – without swearing off all media and hiding out in a cave – it’s nice to be able to imagine simpler times every now and again.
That being said, we took some comfort in photographer Julie Dermansky’s gallery of hand-painted signs displaying advertisements from around the world. Though the images themselves lack the glossy sophistication of their modern counterparts, the messages being delivered are no less powerful. Â See the full Flickr set here. Â Â
