The Green Void

By Claudia Cukrov on February 11, 2009

The Green Void is the latest architectural achievement from Melbourne’s Laboratory for Visionary Architecture, aka LAVA.   Suspended from 2mm stainless steel cables, the structure freely hangs within the central atrium of Sydney’s recently restored Customs House.  Claiming to “bridge the gap between dreams and the real world”, LAVA’s design sought to reinvent the traditional idea of structural application by constructing a design which involved minimal surface tension.  While giving off a solid appearance, LAVA’s design is actually constructed from soft, flexible, two-way stretch lycra.  Set to a soundscape from artist David Chesworth, The Green Void reportedly weighs only forty kilograms.  You can take a virtual tour of the structure here.
