New social network Toaí (Portuguese for “I’m Around”) goes beyond what is offered by well known networks such as Orkut, Facebook and MySpace by promoting not only virtual interactions, but also face-to-face meetings. At first glance, it is a social network like any other: you sign up; you fill out a profile. But it also goes a few steps further: it asks you for your mobile number and uses it to text you with relevant music, art, and stores near where you are (even when you’re on the go) that the system predicts you will like, based on your profile information and friends’ favorites. It will also tell you when your Toaí pals are nearby, or where and when to meet them. ToAí goes beyond the virtual world and promotes real live interaction. By bringing together your network of friends as well as customized location-based tips on arts, culture, and events, Toaí is making socializing an inherently online and offline experience.

This is cool, but could be a bit intrusive.

As a member of Toaí team, I would like to add a comment o bring more clarity.
I hope everybody be happy with the event of receiving an SMS from a friend that is near you to create the possibility of the meeting (encountering each other). That is the reason why Toaí was created, to make people encounter friends beyond virtual life -> in real life.
Keep in mind that, in Toaí, you have full control of messagens you receive, invitations of new friends etc.
When someone live the experience of being reached by technology the way Toaí does, it becomes a way of life.
I mean that when you meet a friend you were not expecting to, you get a joy effect.
If this already happened to you, you know what I am talking about.
If not, try Toaí if you have access to celular phones in Brasil (launching must be somewhere).
It is truly worthwile.

sign in to another social network? I wonder if, with the amount of logins we had today, another one will be useful…
