BMW Art Cars Cruise into NYC
The BMW Art Car World Tour has appeared at major museums around the globe since September 2006. Beginning today, four classic BMW Art Cars, each painted by one of the greatest painters of the 20th century – Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein will be on exhibition at Vanderbilt Hall, set in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal.
BMW is also proud to present an interpretation of the joy of driving by artist Robin Rhode in collaboration with director Jake Scott. The large painting was produced by Rhode driving a BMW Z4 Roadster that painted via its tires.
The idea of the BMW Art Car was born in 1975, when art auctioneer and racing driver Hervé Poulain entered the 24-hour Le Mans race for the first time. Seeking a link between the worlds of art and racing, Poulain asked his friend, artist Alexander Calder, to paint his 480-hp BMW 3.0 CSL. The result was so remarkable, BMW decided to continue this collaboration. Today there are 16 BMW Art Cars by prominent artists, from 10 countries spanning five continents.
