Character Project: Portraits of America

By Nicko Margolies on March 12, 2009

The Character Project is a collection of portraits hoping to capture the diversity of subjects across the US.  The USA Network (who’s tagline is “Characters Welcome”) and the Aperture Foundation commissioned a group of eleven photographers to create “a celebration of the characters that make our country unique.”  Each photographer was encouraged to bring their unique style to each portrait and infuse their own professional eye with the character of their subjects.  The subjects range from a young football player and a homecoming queen to organic farmers in the Northwest and patrons of a quiet barbershop.  Photographers include legends like Sylvia Plachy and Mary Ellen Mark, amongst many others.

The project culminates in a vibrant photography book, featuring a forward by Tom Brokaw. The photographs will be displayed at gallery exhibitions in New York City, DC, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Aperture and Vanity Fair will also feature the series in print while the USA Network will air a special on the project.  The project celebrates diversity while hoping to connect people through common portraiture and social landscape.

The exhibition will be making its NYC debut at Stephan Weiss Studio from tomorrow, March 13 to Saturday March 14.
